Angel Park Opens in Perry Hall

County officials and local leaders cut the ribbon on Perry Hall's newest park Sunday.

PERRY HALL, MD — The ribbon was cut at Angel Park next to the Perry Hall Library Sunday afternoon, the culmination of years of planning and months of construction.

The park on Honeygo Boulevard will officially open to the public on Monday, Oct. 31.

Angel Park was designed to be the largest and most accessible playground in the Baltimore region for children with special needs. A wheelchair-accessible “shaky bridge,” Braille panel, therapeutic swings, 30-foot accessible zip lines and quiet places for children with autism and other conditions are some of the special features.

The storybook-themed playground was developed with input from 4,500 pre-K through fifth graders from the Perry Hall area and includes local flair. A pirate ship, castle and treehouse are among the whimsical features, while a seafood store and Terps turtle are some of the Maryland-inspired elements.

Baltimore County Executive Kevin Kamenetz presented official Baltimore County Hero pins to Kelli and Andy Szczybor, who came up with the idea of Angel Park in memory of their son, Ryan, who died as a baby of leukemia.

“I am amazed and tremendously impressed with what all of you have accomplished here,” Kamenetz said. “You saw a need, came up with a very ambitious plan, and you got it done."

Community leaders have been working to bring the park on Honeygo Boulevard to fruition since 2012. More than 4,000 people helped volunteer to build the park over the summer.

“When you lose a child, you are just looking for something to help them live on and to help your family to heal,” Kelli Szczybor said.

The 16,000-square-foot park will be surrounded by pickets and pavers where donors can memorialize those they consider to be angels.
