Disbarred Boston Lawyer Sentenced To 39 Months For Stealing From Clients

The attorney was ordered to pay more than $2 million in restitution and a judgment of more than $2 million.

BOSTON, MA — A disbarred Boston Lawyer was sentenced Tuesday to 39 months in federal prison for stealing more than $2 million from clients.

Patrick J. Dolan, 60, was also ordered to pay $2,022,833 in restitution as well as a $2,087,372.55 judgment.

Dolan had pleaded guilty in October to wire fraud.

For six years starting in November 2018, Dolan defrauded clients who had entrusted their money to him, according to a media release from the U.S. Attorney's Office.

"Specifically, Dolan stole over $2 million that he was holding in escrow pending the outcome of a family trust lawsuit in which Dolan represented one of the parties," the release said. "Dolan used the stolen funds for himself and his family members, including by making transfers to shell companies, using funds to make mortgage, tuition and student loan payments as well as using funds to pay for personal items and services."

Dolan also stole at least $87,500 from another client's trust and used the money for a down payment on a Haverhill property where he subsequently lived with his family, according to the release.

"Dolan also made false statements to his clients and others regarding the stolen funds, falsified bank statements and falsified accounting records," the release said.

Dolan was disbarred in July after he submitted an affidavit of resignation "in which he agreed that bar counsel could prove the allegations of the petition for discipline pending against him, among them intentional misuse of trust funds causing deprivation," according to the Board of Bar Overseers.
