“An Infinite Variety of Fruit”: Historic New England Apples
A Lecture with Christie Higginbottom
The early 19th century is a rich chapter in the story of New England apples. Hundreds of varieties originated in historic orchards. This program will explore the role played by apples at the table and on the farm landscape in the past, and will look at the revival of interest today.
Christie Higginbottom has worked as a costumed interpreter at Old Sturbridge Village since 1981. She writes and consults on historic gardens and their interpretation, antique plants, and herb use; and lectures at museums and historic sites, garden clubs, historical societies, and libraries.
