MEDFORD, MA — A group of Medford students spearheaded an effort to build a slavery memorial at the Salem Street Burying Ground. Jenny Lu, Joe Schmidt, Jasmine Hagbourne and Liam Brady worked with the city to recognize the more than 50 slaves buried in a corner of the cemetery.
A GoFundMe campaign raised $2,125 and was matched with a $2,000 grant from the Freedom's Way Heritage Association. The monument will be unveiled on Saturday, June 8 at 10:30 a.m. outside the Salem Street Burying Ground.
The students will host the ceremony, which will feature speakers discussing the history of slavery in Medford.
