Medford Man Who Blew Woman Up is Still Guilty

The state's highest court affirmed the conviction of the man's killing of an Everett waitress by sending a pipe bomb to her home.

A Medford man convicted of a killing an Everett waitress he harassed for years is still guilty, the state's highest court confirmed Friday.

The Supreme Judicial Court ruled unanimously that Steven Caruso was properly convicted for the 2000 killing of Sandra Berfield, 32. Caruso sent Berfield, who he had been obsessed with and harassed for years, a pipe bomb in the mail that exploded in her home. The package said it was from a relative.

Caruso appealed the conviction, claiming, among other things, that a jailhouse informant's testimony violated the his confrontation rights. The Court said it found "no reversible error" and that it affirms the initial guilty verdict.
