MEDFORD, MA – Two police officers were honored Thursday for their roles in saving a delivery driver's life. Officers Jason Montalbano and Patrick Doherty received the Life Emergency Award for helping save 42-year-old Liang Cheng, who was stabbed during a robbery in January.

Around 8:15 p.m. on Jan. 12, Cheng called police and said he had been stabbed and robbed on Washington Street. Doherty and Montalbano saw blood on the ground and a car running in the road when they arrived at the scene.

The officers found Cheng lying face up on the sidewalk and saw a heavy amount of blood coming from his lower back when they turned him on his side, police said. They put pressure on the wound until firefighters and EMTs arrived.

"Doctors at the Massachusetts General Hospital believed that the immediate treatment of direct pressure to the victim's wound most likely prevented him from bleeding out, most likely saving his life," police said in a statement.

Cheng, who worked as a delivery driver for May's Café, underwent six hours of surgery and had his kidney and gallbladder removed. The suspect in the attack, 18-year-old Nicholas Davis, admitted to stabbing Cheng and taking $200 from him, according to police.
