Sam Brings Superhero Status to Whiz Kids

Sam Masciave knows that superheroes exist. He may be one.

Sam Masciave, a first grader at Roberts Elementary School, just celebrated his sixth birthday. His family had one low-key party after school for his friends, and one high-octane Superhero-themed party for his extensive family.

Mild-mannered by day, unsung superhero secret identity: this is Sam. Sam has been walking with Autism Speaks since 2008, "which was the very year he was diagnosed with PDD-NOS. Sarah (his mother) had found out about the walk and was determined to do something to help the cause.

"Almost everyone who walks is part of a team, so Sarah came up with our own team name, Sam's Smile. Sam knows it has something to do with him, but since we've never had a real sit-down conversation with him about his diagnoses, he's doesn't give much mind to the details and just tries to enjoy the moment. There are thousands who walk, and some dress up in costume to make it fun. Sam enjoys picking out his favorites in the crowd," Aldo Masciave, his father, explains.

Sam loves superheroes, and Captain America is his favorite "Because his costume is all red white and blue and he has a cool shield. Also because he is the first Avenger."

Sam's own first grade superpower is being able to read really well, but he wouldn't mind "being able to shoot webs like Spiderman and carry a powerful hammer like Thor."

Active in his church and local sports, Sam is a busy guy. He enjoyed playing Tball for the first time with North Medford Little League, where he was often shortstop.

Aldo adds, "I think we'd like Medford to know that Sam is a bright boy, who is as sweet as they come. He loves to have fun, but sometimes needs a little help getting started. Sam is just like you and me."

Sunday's walk was gray and damp, but Sam's team was undeterred. You can help Autism Speaks by donating to Sam's team, Sam's Smile. Find more information here.
