Good Design, Good Sause Sent this Whiz Kid to the Top

Good design and a good cause sent Alyssa to the top of the competition.

A member of McGlynn School’s Builders Club, Alyssa Valentyn submitted the winning design for this year’s t-shirt contest.

"There is nothing more satisfying than getting a skill that I've worked on for months," she said.

As a gymnast with a penchant for science, this trait will serve Alyssa well.

Alyssa has broad interests and enjoys science, Language Arts, gymnastics, and camping. Alyssa has won awards for her artistic side before, and even had a group project entered in an art gallery, but this was her first award for design. “I tried the first design that came into my head, which was the magazine cut-out style. I use it a lot, and I think it’s pretty cool.” She had thought about entering but hadn’t committed yet. “My friends and my teacher suggested I enter.  I’d been considering it before then, but that’s when I decided I should actually enter.”

Alyssa worked up her design, but was actually out sick the day it was due. Luck, in the form of her sister, was on her side. “My sister, Jillian Valentyn, is also in the Builders Club, therefore I was able to submit the design. Later on, my other friends at the club texted me, saying I’d won, and I didn’t believe them!”

Alyssa is looking forward to her freshman year at Medford High School, where she will be involved with cross-country and gymnastics.
