Medford Middle Schooler Honored for Leading the Way on Food Bank Fundraiser

Middle school student Amber Harbison receives Make a Difference Award from the JFK Library.

John F. Kennedy believed everyone could make a difference in the world. Today, the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library honors that legacy by awarding 100 Massachusetts middle schoolers the Make a Difference Award. Andrews School Seventh Grader Amber Harbison accepted that award on March 15.

Amber, president of the Andrews Middle School Builders Club, headed up a charity drive called “Hats for Hunger”. Every month students can pay a dollar to wear an appropriate hat in the school. So far, Amber estimates Hats for Hunger has raised over $150 for the Greater Boston Food Bank. The Hats for Hunger campaign will continue through June.

Principal Paul D’Alleva and faculty advisor David Lamb nominated Amber for the award. It is her second year in the Builders Club.

Builders Clubs are the middle school version of Key Clubs and Kiwanis Clubs. They emphasize civic engagement, responsibility, and leadership.

Not content with Making a Difference with Hats for Hunger, Amber was counting pennies at the last Builders Club meeting for Pennies for Patients. This fundraiser benefits the fight against blood cancers like leukemia.
