Whiz Kid Scarlett Nielsen Really Cleans Up

Meet Scarlett, one of the youngest helpers at Carr Park's GreenUp CleanUp.

According to Scarlett Nielsen, almost 5, volunteers at the May 7 GreenUp CleanUp "did a good job."  There were a handful of adults and at least as many children helping to clean up Carr Park that day, and Scarlett stood out as one of the youngest helpers.

GreenUp CleanUp is a partnership between Grace Church, the City of Medford and local businesses to clean and renew Medford's parks and open spaces.

Scarlett, who was there with her mother Stephanie Nielsen, came prepared.  She had her own gloves and water, and a determination to improve Carr Park.  Why did Scarlett chose to help Carr Park?  Because "there's a lot of trash there."  By the end of the clean up, there was significantly less.  Scarlett helped by picking up trash and recycling bottles and cans.

Scarlett and her family are committed to the environment, and Scarlett is learning the importance of stewardship and conservation.  As a family, the Nielsens pick up trash at parks and on trails, so Scarlett has been practicing these habits since she could walk.  Scarlett would like other kids to know that it's important for everyone to do their part.

At home, Scarlett enjoys dancing The Nutcracker and playing outside. Scarlett says her favorite outdoor activity is "playing in our kiddie pool."  Scarlett may attend other GreenUp CleanUps, but Carr Park is a family favorite.
