You Can See The Northern Lights from Here

The Northern Lights, a local band that won the Minuteman Talent Show, shares what sets them apart.

For Robotics/Pre-Engineering students, their sound is decidedly old school.  Listen to local band The Northern Lights and you won't wonder what enabled them to win the Minuteman High Talent Show.  It was clearly "Superstition" that carried John Lessard (guitar), Joseph Sullivan (saxophone and drums), Anthony Carreon (drums), Jack DiSalvatore (guitar), and vocalist Gabriella Ferreira to victory.

Some band members have been together for a few years now, but the winning iteration had only played together ONCE before the talent show.  The band began in 2009 as Fez and the Fezzants in that year's Minuteman Battle of the Bands.  In 2010 they won the Battle of the Bands and were able to add Anthony as a permanent drummer.  They added Gabriella, a student at Medford High, as a vocalist the day before the talent show.  According to John, "We had only one practice with her with guitar and saxophone to practice for the event."

The band's key to awesomenes?  Why did they win?  Joseph summed it up: "prepared."  John says the key to awesomeness "would have to be our devotion.  We practice as often as possible and work together so well that we are able to stand out from other bands in our school."  They even meet in Minuteman's music class to practice.  That's devotion.  And that's prepared.
