Melrose School Master Plan Progressing Along
Two design firms recently completed a district-wide evaluation.
MELROSE, MA — The city announced an update on the status and progress of its School Facilities Master Plan, which is the first comprehensive district-wide evaluation in nearly 30 years.
The City Council appropriated funds to conduct this Master Plan study back in Fiscal Year 2023. Melrose leaders hired Boston-based architecture and design firm Arrowstreet as well as MLP Integrated Design to lead the study together. MLP is based in West Newbury and specializes in educational facilities.
“So far the project has involved data-collection to determine the condition of the existing spaces. School principals and administrators have participated in visioning and programming sessions focused on teaching, learning, and the best use of space for current and future educational needs,” city and district leaders said in a statement. "In the months ahead, the project will engage with stakeholder groups like school employees, students, families, and the community at large to gather more feedback and input.”

The last school facility evaluation eventually resulted in the establishment of the Roosevelt Elementary School at 253 Vinton St. and the Melrose Veterans Memorial Middle School on the Lynn Fells Parkway as well as major additions to the Lincoln Elementary School on West Wyoming Avenue. The goal of this ongoing study is largely the same as it hopes to come out with a long-term strategy for consistent optimization of all eight public schools in the district.
The School Facilities Master Plan is being oversought by a committee appointed by Mayor Jen Grigoraitis. It includes Superintendent of Schools Cari Berman, Deputy Superintendent of Administration and Finance Kenneth Kelley, former Melrose Superintendent John Macero, Director of Planning and Community Development Lori Massa, Director of Public Works Elena Proakis Ellis, Melrose High and Middle School Principal Jason Merrill, eighth grade teacher and Melrose Educators Union Representative Leslie Means, School Committee member Matthew Hartman, and Winthrop School Principal Michael Tracy.
