Anthony Roesel of Concord was arrested for his role in an alleged incident on Crescent Street; cops unable to determine if gun was fired.

CONCORD, NH — After a lengthy investigation, a local man has been charged for his role in a reported "shots fired" incident in Penacook nearly two months ago, according to police. Anthony Roesel, 25, of Concord, was arrested on Nov. 2, 2017, and charged with simple assault and domestic violence-simple assault. The charges, according to Lt. Sean Ford, the commander of the criminal investigations division of the Concord Police Department, are for two separate incidents.

Back on Sept. 16, more than 20 police officers from Concord and surrounding communities, the New Hampshire State Police, and Merrimack County Sheriff’s Department were called to Penacook for a report of two men involved in an altercation where shots were fired. After arriving at the Crescent Street area of the village and investigating the incident and allegations made, police were able to identify the involved parties but couldn’t come to a definitive conclusion about what happened right away.

“Responding officers and detectives conducted a lengthy investigation and executed search warrants,” Ford stated. “Their investigation revealed that Mr. Roesel, who was a passenger in a car, had a verbal exchange with a male who was crossing the road.”

Roesel allegedly ordered the driver of the car he was in to pull over in the area where the verbal exchange occurred. He then exited the vehicle and allegedly assaulted the other man, according to police.

The victim fell to the ground and injured his head, according to police.

According to the allegation at the time, the victim produced a firearm and discharged it toward Roesel – who was allegedly still acting aggressively – but missed him. The victim then fled the area, according to police.

“Investigators found no physical evidence that a firearm was discharged and no firearm has been recovered,” Ford stated. “Investigators determined that Roesel was the primary aggressor and that the victim would have been acting in self-defense if a weapon was, in fact, used.”

Neither Roesel nor the other man knew each other, Ford said. A warrant was issued for Roesel’s not long after the end of the investigation.

Last week, according to police, an officer working a construction detail on Loudon Road was made aware of a domestic violence incident allegedly involving Roesel not far from Immaculate Heart of Mary Church. Other officers were sent to the area, located Roesel, and arrested him on the warrant as well as a second assault charge for the alleged domestic incident. Roesel was arraigned the next day.

Police are still asking for witnesses to either incident come forward and speak to police about what they know. Witnesses can reach Ford at 603-225-8600 or contact the Concord Regional Crimeline at 603-226-3100.

Roesel, according to reports on Patch, is no stranger to police.

Last December, he was arrested on Oak Hill Road for driving while intoxicated, aggravated driving while intoxicated, driving while intoxicated-second offense, endangering the welfare of a child/incompetent, and driving after revocation or suspension. In May 2016, Roesel was arrested for reckless conduct and criminal threatening, both felonies, as well a criminal mischief, from an alleged incident at Sam's Convenience on Village Street. In April 2015, he was arrested on Union Street for criminal mischief after allegedly throwing a lamp off a desk during an argument. Roesel was arrested for criminal trespass and consumption of liquor on private property – outside of the TLC Adult Daycare on Loudon Road – in October 2014. The year before, he was arrested for driving after revocation or suspension on Loudon Road.
