Poet, Author Launches At-Large Concord City Council Bid

George Jack files to run for city council while former teacher Barbara Higgins files to run again for school board.

CONCORD, NH — A local man who attempted to seek public office four years ago in the capital city is giving it another try. George Jack, an author and poet, has filed to run for one of two at-large Concord City Council seats on Sept. 13, 2017. Jack joins incumbent at-large council candidate Amanda Grady Sexton and Fred Keach who both filed again for four-year seats on last week.

Jack ran unsuccessfully in 2013, for the District C School Board seat. He was bested by George “Rusty” Cofrin, by about a three-to-one margin. (For more information on this and other neighborhood stories, subscribe to Concord NH Patch to receive daily newsletters and breaking news alerts.)

Jack was born in Cambridge, MA, but has spent most of his life in New Hampshire. Acc’ording to a state website, he is the author of three books – “The Cellophane Tuxedo,” “Frost Heaves and Flannel,” and “Againaissance.” He has also been published in a number of publication and also participates in poetry readings.

Other than the Ward 10 district seat – where David Sky of Appleton Street has filed to run against Dan St. Hilaire – no other city council candidates have challengers. No one has filed to run against Concord Mayor Jim Bouley either yet.

Barbara Higgins, who represents District B and is a former school teacher in the Concord School District, filed to run again for a third term this week.

Incumbent Thomas Croteau is running for re-election to the District A seat which represents voters in Wards 1, 2, 3, and 4. Danielle Smith of Concord, a photographer who runs Rosy Hue Photography, has also signed up to run for the District A seat on Friday.

Alana Kimball, who represents District C, announced on Monday night that she was not running for re-election.
