CONCORD, NH — A teen from Andover lost his life after a crash on Currier Road on Sunday night.

Just before midnight, New Hampshire State Police were sent to a report of a truck off the road, fully submerged in water, on the road. A caller reported the driver appeared to still be inside.

East Andover fire and rescue teams also responded and removed the driver, Wyatt Carleton, 17, of Andover, from the 2010 Nissan Frontier pickup truck and pronounced him dead at the scene. He was the lone occupant of the vehicle, according to Tyler Dumont, the public information officer for the New Hampshire State Police.

“Based on the preliminary investigation of the crash, Troopers believe that the driver was traveling westbound on Currier Road when, for reasons that remain under investigation, the vehicle veered off the road to the left as it was crossing over a culvert,” he said. “The vehicle flipped over the edge of the road and landed in the drainage ditch, coming to rest on its roof.”

Dumont said the initial investigation revealed the pickup truck appeared to have drifted on the ice-covered road a few hundred feet before it went off into the drainage ditch.

“All aspects of the crash remain under investigation,” he said.

The road was closed for around three hours during the investigation. Members of the Franklin Fire Department also assisted with the case.

Weekend Crashes

While there was not a ton of snow in New Hampshire on Saturday, state police reported dozens of crashes.

Between 6 a.m. and 4 p.m., troopers responded to 69 crashes, including a pickup truck rollover on the Everett Turnpike in Nashua. Most of the crashes were in Hillsborough, Rockingham, and Strafford counties, Dumont said.

No injuries were reported.

Posted speed limits were reduced on Interstate 95, I-93, and the Everett Turnpike. Still, 29 of the crashes were due to vehicles leaving the roads. Nine drivers were also assisted.

“With additional winter weather likely to arrive in the coming weeks, the state police remind drivers that road conditions can change rapidly and encourage caution during hazardous conditions,” Dumont said. “While behind the wheel, operators should maintain safe speeds that allow for increased reaction times and keep appropriate distance from other vehicles, including plow trucks, to prevent collisions.”

Dumont said drivers were also reminded about state laws requiring them to make sure to clear snow and ice off vehicles before driving (Jessica’s law) and allow space for first responders on the side of the road (the “move over” law).
