Barack Obama: Let's Be Reasonable on Gun Safety

The Second Amendment does not give U.S. citizens the right to own a flamethrower.

If you saw President Barack Obama on CNN last night with Anderson Cooper, at the President’s Town Hall Meeting in Fairfax, Virginia, on what we need to do to resolve the problem of gun violence in America, you learned something very important, that our President, in his last year at the job, has a strong concern about protecting the American people, and especially young children, from the danger of too many guns, and too many very dangerous types of guns, in our country.

President Obama is not trying to take away the right of individuals under the Second Amendment to the United States Constitution to keep and bear arms as reasonably necessary for self-defense. President Obama is just trying to keep our people safe using the legal means available to him as President.

If you look at the other side to this issue, you should note that there really is not another side.
The National Rifle Association, an organization which functions for the purpose of helping gun manufacturers make as much money as possible, is opposed to any kind of gun control legislation, include any reasonable legislation.

You can’t get very far with me or with the rest of the American people if what you are opposed to is something objectively reasonable.

This is what I am talking about: I agree with the NRA that the American people have a Second Amendment right to keep and bear arms, particularly for self-defense and the defense of one’s home or residence.

What I do not agree with, and let’s be clear on this, I do not agree that individual citizens should have the right to possess automatic weapons capable of killing 10 or 20 people in less than a minute. I do not believe that people have the right to possess flamethrowers or assault weapons, or tanks, or nuclear weapons.

You see where I am going with this.

Let’s get back to being reasonable on guns.
