Local Businesswoman Leads March of Dimes Effort to Improve Health of Bergen County Babies

More than 12,000 of New Jersey babies will be born premature this year, and Dr. Kiran Bhat is working with the March of Dimes to change this.

Dr. Bhat, Director of Neonatology at Hackensack University Medical Center at Pascack Valley, knows how important the March of Dimes mission is. She has taken on the role of Bergen County March for Babies Chair to raise awareness and important funding to provide for babies who are born premature or with birth defects. Dr. Bhat has made the commitment to raise $50,000 as part of the overall goal of $230,000 in Bergen County.

March for Babies, the March of Dimes largest fundraiser, helps fund lifesaving research and educational programs aimed at helping moms have healthy babies. Last year in Bergen County more than $230,000 was raised.  This year, March for Babies Chair Dr. Bhat will focus on recruiting new companies to participate and lead the community in making a difference for the health of moms and babies.

“Each and every day, I am touched by the emotions of new parents whose babies are born premature or face medical challenges.  Each of these tiny fighters represent love, hope and the future for their families.  The March of Dimes helps to fund research, provide education and support for our babies.  I am proud to be the Bergen County Chair for the 2014 March for Babies and to support the fight towards making sure that every baby enters this world with the best possible start,” said Dr. Bhat.

Bergen County residents can sign up today at www.marchforbabies.org and start a team with co-workers, family or friends. Last year, more than 900 people attended the event -- which will be held this year on Sunday, April 27 at Darlington Park in Mahwah, New Jersey.
