Bigotry, betrayal, dirty politics, friendship and hope come to the fore in The Radburn Players’ production of Jason Miller’s Pulitzer Prize and Tony-winning drama That Championship Season, which will open this weekend in Fair Lawn. Show dates are May 2, 3, 8, 9 and 10 at 8 pm, and Sunday May 4 at 2pm, at the Radburn Association Grange Hall, 29-20 Fair Lawn Avenue. Tickets can be purchased before each performance at $15 for adults ($10 for members) and $12 for students and seniors.
Directed by Natalie Ross, That Championship Season occurs 20 years after a stunning 1952 state basketball championship, when the winning coach and four of his former players get together for a reunion in in a small Pennsylvania town. Hopelessly out of step with the times, they reveal their raw social prejudices, bigotry and fear as they attempt to justify the current state of their lives. Then, when unexpected conflicts come to a head, they are forced to confront the truth about themselves.
“We were looking to stage a show that would present some powerful drama for our audiences,” says Ross, who has directed numerous Players productions. “This offers exceptional and riveting performances by a talented group of men.” The play stars Eric Heppel, Shawn Kane, Michael J. Rogers, Michael Roney and David Sparano.
