JFK Bellmore's Samuel Epstein Named Intel Finalist

Bellmore-Merrick student will head to Washington, D.C. in March for the final round of nationwide competition.

One John F. Kennedy High School student made it to the final round of the 2015 Intel Science Talent Search contest.

Senior Samuel Epstein was one of 40 students from around the country to be selected as a finalist for his project, “The Effects of the Modulation of TOR Signaling and Microbial Exposure on Feeding Behavior in Drosophila melanogaster.”

In March, Epstein will travel to Washington, D.C. where he will undergo a final judging, display his work for the public, and meet with notable scientists. He will also compete for more than $1,000,000 in awards, including the grand prize of $150,000, awarded to the top three students.

JFK seniors Beatrice Brown, Justin Shapiro, and former student Jayson Chojar, who recently moved to Connecticut, were also honored as semifinalists. Each of the students won $1,000 for the school. Only 300 students were designated semifinalists out of more than 1,800 entrants.
