Police: Man Drove Drunk in Hempstead While Child Was Home Alone

Incident happened early Monday morning, cops say.

An Elmont man faces charges after he left his young child home alone and was caught driving drunk early Monday, according to Nassau County Police.

At 3:44 a.m., officers stopped at 2011 BMW for driving on North Franklin Street in Hempstead with a broken tail light, cops said.

During the stop, police noticed the driver, Ruben Saravia, 36, had bloodshot, watery eyes, slurred speech, and smelled of alcohol, cops said.

Saravia was taken into custody and found with six white pills believed to be hydrocodone, police said.

Officers went to Saravia’s home after they discovered his 8-year-old child had been left there alone, cops said. The child was found unharmed and was released to the custody of a friend, police said.

Saravia was charged with DWI, endangering the welfare of a child, seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance. He was also cited for improper left turn and having a defective tail light. He will be arraigned Monday at First District Court in Hempstead.
