5 Killed in 4 Separate Crashes on Long Island Tuesday

BREAKING: Five people were killed within a 10-hour span Tuesday, police say.

Five people were killed within a 10-hour span on Long Island roadways Tuesday.

Here are the details:

  • A 63-year-old woman identified as Janis Hewitt, of Montauk, died after her car collided with a gas truck in Montauk at about 12:40 p.m. Read more.
  • A man riding a scooter was killed in a crash with a pickup truck at 1:53 p.m. in East Shoreham, police said. According to police, 45-year-old Kenneth Staufer was driving a 2015 Dodge Ram west on North Country Road at 1:53 p.m. when a scooter heading east crossed over the double yellow lines near Valentine Road and struck Staufer’s pickup truck.   • A 50-year-old man was killed in a single-car crash in Melville. According to authorities, the man was driving a 2016 Nissan Maxima westbound on Old Country Road near Old East Neck Road when he drove over a median and struck a guardrail at around 7:06 p.m. Read more.
  • Two people were killed and one seriously injured after their car went off the road and struck trees in the woods in Northampton at 9:51 p.m., police said. Read more.

No criminal charges have been filed in any of the crashes.
