• Boone Council explores habitability ordinance modeled on Asheville ordinance (wataugademocrat.com) — Boone residents may soon see stronger protections against paying rent for unsafe or substandard housing, as the Town Council is exploring a habitability ordinance modeled on Asheville's new rules. Council also approved a long-term janitorial contract, expanded water and sewer connection authority, extended outside accounting help, honored Dolly Parton with a local "One Good Deed" call, and noted an upcoming Oct. 2 film showing downtown.

• Bostrom, Watauga harriers sweep High Country XC Classic (wataugademocrat.com) — Watauga High's cross country teams gave Boone fans plenty to cheer about, sweeping the Blue Ridge Mountain Rentals High Country XC Classic on their home course. The boys and girls each dominated with deep top-30 finishes, while earlier in the week the Lady Pioneers also captured the Northwestern 6A/7A preconference meet, signaling strong momentum heading into bigger regional races.
