NEWTOWN BOROUGH, PA — Newtown Borough Councilor Maryellen Raymond is expected to resign her second ward council seat following Tuesday night’s meeting.
Her impending departure from the council was announced by President Emily Heinz at the July agenda meeting.

Raymond anticipates submitting her resignation on July 10. The council will then have 45 days to fill the vacancy.
“I’ll be crying forever,” said Raymond, who works as an assistant enrollment director at the Bucks County Community College. “But I’m so happy I’ve had the opportunity to do this. I’ve learned so much and I’m happy I had the opportunity to serve Newtown Borough.”

According to Heinz, the borough will begin accepting applications on July 10 from second ward residents interested in serving on council. Letters and resumes should be emailed to borough secretary Judy Musto at jmusto.newtown@gmail.com or dropped off at the Newtown Borough Hall, 23 North State Street, Newtown 18940.
To be considered, residents must have lived in the second ward for at least a year. Second ward residents vote at the Newtown, Bucks County Joint Municipal Authority at 15 South Congress Street.
At the council’s August 7 work session, the council plans to vote to accept Raymond’s resignation. The council also expects to conduct interviews at the meeting for her replacement.
The council is planning to make an appointment at its August 13 meeting. The successful candidate will serve the remainder of Raymond's term from August 2024 to December 2025.
