📰 News we're reading

1. Lexington considers charging HOAs for streetlights (lexingtonchronicle.com) — Lexington officials are rethinking who should pay to power subdivision streetlights, a move that could shift thousands of dollars in annual costs onto HOAs and residents. Town staff will bring proposed changes to the decades-old ordinance in September, alongside a review of a new program to better protect Lexington's drinking water system.

2. Lexington County sues Town of Chapin over sewer access for proposed Brighton development (wltx.com) — Lexington County has sued the Town of Chapin, claiming the town is refusing to provide sewer taps promised for the proposed Brighton development after the county spent more than $16 million on infrastructure. The dispute could derail a $20.4 million land sale and, county officials argue, gives Chapin's mayor undue control over growth tied to sewer capacity.

3. These area middle schools are among SC's top performers. Who's on the list? (thestate.com) — Middle schools in Lexington County, especially Lexington 1 campuses like Lakeside, Beechwood, Pleasant Hill and Meadow Glen, posted some of South Carolina's strongest gains on the 2025-26 SC READY tests. Many Columbia-area schools, including West Columbia's Gray Collegiate, now rank among the state's top performers in English language arts and math.

4. Red Cross plans Lexington County blood drives (lexingtonchronicle.com) — The Red Cross is bringing several blood drives to Lexington County in September, including one at Lake Murray Baptist Church in Lexington on Sept. 13. Residents can book appointments online or by app and even receive a Hello Kitty-themed thank-you gift while helping prevent blood shortages across the region.

5. TriDAC celebrates 40 years (lexingtonchronicle.com) — Gifted middle schoolers from Lexington School District One can audition for the Tri-District Arts Consortium, which just marked its 40th year with a new commemorative sculpture. The competitive summer program offers three weeks of intensive arts training and public showcases, with nominations for next year's cohort opening in October.
