Citing Delta Variant, WHO Urges Mask Use Among Vaccinated

If you're fully vaccinated and were hoping to ditch the mask, the World Health Organization is urging you to reconsider.

The World Health Organization on Friday urged fully vaccinated people to continue donning their masks, citing the COVID-19 delta variant as a rising cause for concern.

The delta variant, which originated in India, has now been confirmed in 92 countries.

The variant also is responsible for at least 10 percent of all new cases in the United States, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and is on its way to becoming the dominant variant in the nation.

“People cannot feel safe just because they had the two doses. They still need to protect themselves,” Dr. Mariangela Simao, WHO assistant director-general for access to medicines and health products, said during a news conference from the WHO's Geneva headquarters. “Vaccine alone won’t stop community transmission."
