NEW YORK — CNN on Saturday terminated anchor Chris Cuomo after learning the full extent of how Cuomo aided his brother, former New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo, after several women accused the then-governor of sexual harassment.

The termination of the Cuomo Prime Time host was "effectively immediately," according to a CNN report.

As women came forward accusing former Gov. Andrew Cuomo of sexual harassment, his brother, despite being a CNN anchor, pressed sources for information on the accusers and reported back to the governor's staff on what he was learning, The Associated Press reported.

Cuomo also was active in helping craft the team's response to the charges, according to emails and a transcript of his testimony to investigators working for state Attorney General Letitia James, according to The AP.

In a statement, CNN said: "Chris Cuomo was suspended earlier this week pending further evaluation of new information that came to light about his involvement with his brother's defense. We retained a respected law firm to conduct the review and have terminated him, effective immediately."

Cuomo issued his statement Saturday: "This is not how I want my time at CNN to end, but I have already told you why and how I helped my brother. So let me now say, as disappointing as this is, I could not be more proud of the team at Cuomo Prime Time and the work we did as CNN's #1 show in the most competitive time slot. I owe them all and will miss that group of special people who did really important work."
