Donald Trump to Meet with Mexican President

The meeting will come Wednesday afternoon, hours before Trump is to give what he calls a "major" speech on immigration.

Hours before he is expected to give what he calls a "major" speech on immigration, Donald Trump will travel to Mexico, a country he has spent much of his campaign painting as little more than a source of ills for the United States.

Before attending a rally in Everett, Washington, Trump said he would travel over the southern border that he wants to protect with a wall to meet with President Enrique Pena Nieto.

Soon after, Pena Nieto tweeted that Trump had accepted his invitation to meet.

"I believe in dialogue to promote the interests of Mexico in the world, and principally, to protect Mexicans wherever they are," he wrote in Spanish.

The Mexican president has also extended an invitation to Trump's Democratic rival, Hillary Clinton.

The meeting will come hours before he attends a rally where Trump is expected to clarify — once and for all — his stance on immigration and how he plans to deal with people in the United States illegally.

One topic that will surely come up in Mexico is Trump's assertion that a wall will be built on the southern border and that Mexico will pay for it.

Pena Nieto has compared Trump's tone to that of Hitler and Mussolini and his administration has said that they will absolutely not being paying for a wall.

This will be Trump's first meeting with a head of state.

Clinton's campaign used the opportunity to remind people of Trump's previous comments on Mexico and its citizens.

"From the first days of his campaign, Donald Trump has painted Mexicans as 'rapists’ and criminals and has promised to deport 16 million people, including children and U.S. citizens," said Clinton Communication Director Jennifer Palmieri. "He has said we should force Mexico to pay for his giant border wall. He has said we should ban remittances to families in Mexico if Mexico doesn't pay up.

"What ultimately matters is what Donald Trump says to voters in Arizona, not Mexico, and whether he remains committed to the splitting up of families and deportation of millions."
