Ecuador Earthquake: More Than 200 Killed

Ecuador President Rafael Correa provided an update on the death toll from the deadly 7.8 magnitude earthquake that struck the country.

Ecuador was under a state of emergency Sunday after a magnitude 7.8 earthquake struck the country, killing more than 200 people and injuring scores more. Ecuador President Rafael Correa provided an update on the death toll via Twitter saying 233 people had been killed.

The earthquake was felt Saturday in the capital Quito and in parts of neighboring Peru and Colombia. The earthquake is the deadliest in the country since 1979 and was said to be about six times as powerful as the quake that struck southern Japan a day earlier.

According to the USGS, the Ecuador quake had a depth of nearly 12 miles. Several aftershocks have been reported in the country with some as strong as 5.6.

The tsunami threat from the quake has passed.
