FBI Informant Among Those Who Joined Jan. 6 Capitol Riot: Report

WASHINGTON, DC — An FBI informant was among the thousands of people who marched on the U.S. Capitol and stormed the building on Jan. 6, according to a New York Times report, citing confidential records the publication obtained.

The informant, whose name was not revealed, attended the march with members of a Midwest chapter of the far-right group Proud Boys, the Times reported.

Following the storming of the Capitol, the informant reportedly told his handler that members of the Proud Boys had not pre-planned the attack; instead, they were caught up in the herd mentality of the mob.

The report did not mention whether the informant had any knowledge of violence or plans to storm the Capitol ahead of Jan. 6.
