ACROSS AMERICA — Despite a recent uptick in coronavirus cases across the United States, millions of Americans are likely to move ahead with Labor Day celebrations this year, marking the holiday with outdoor barbecues, town festivals and family camping trips.

While celebrating safely is paramount, Mother Nature also holds the power to make or break a perfect outdoor holiday celebration.

Will she be on our side this holiday weekend? While it depends on where you live, the unofficial end of summer looks as if it could be marked with a stormy sendoff in many areas.

The Labor Day weekend forecast calls for storms and rain throughout much of the United States, according to the Old Farmer's Almanac. Here's what the weather could look like by region:

  • Northeast and New England: Dangerous thunderstorms are expected.
  • Great Lakes, Ohio Valley, Midwest: Violent thunderstorms from Kentucky to the Great Lakes area could make for a soggy Labor Day.
  • Southeast: Expect a stormy Labor Day weekend.
  • North Central/Upper Plains: Scattered thunderstorms are possible.
  • South Central: More scattered thunderstorms are in the forecast.
  • Northwest: If you're hoping for clear skies, you're in luck.
  • Southwest: Expect a mix of sun and clouds with a slight chance of rain.

Need a second opinion? The National Weather Service also says we should expect below-normal temperatures and above-normal precipitation.

Forecaster Accuweather also says showers and thunderstorms could put a damper on a part of the holiday weekend across the Midwest, South and interior Southwest. Wet weather in the Northeast may only impact a fraction of the weekend.

If you're hoping for clear skies, though, Accuweather's Labor Day weekend weather map could provide a sunnier outlook depending on where you live.
