WASHINGTON, DC — A Texas company this week recalled ready-to-eat burritos sold at convenience stores nationwide over possible listeria contamination, according to a notice posted by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

Dallas-based Don Miguel Foods issued the recall for 10,642 pounds of carne asada burritos after laboratory testing indicated the product may be contaminated with listeria, a bacteria that causes gastrointestinal problems and primarily affects people with weak or compromised immune systems.

According to officials, the following products are included in the recall:

  • 7-oz. individual wax paper packages containing “Don Miguel Hand Made Burrito Carne Asada” with date code D23270 printed on the package.

The products subject to recall also bear the establishment number “EST. 20049” inside the USDA mark of inspection.

Eating food contaminated with Listeria can cause listeriosis, a serious infection that primarily affects older adults, people with weakened immune systems, pregnant women and their newborns. Symptoms include fever, muscle aches, headache, stiff neck, confusion, loss of balance, and convulsions. Symptoms are sometimes preceded by diarrhea or other gastrointestinal problems.

Officials issued the recall due to concern the product may be in consumers’ freezers. Anyone who purchased the burritos is urged not to consume them. The products should be thrown away or returned to the place of purchase, officials said.

No confirmed reports of reactions or illness due to consuming the affected products have been reported, officials said. Anyone concerned about illness should contact a healthcare provider.
