Grandmother Shot Grandson After Tea Cup Dispute: Police

The 75-year-old Minnesota woman could receive a $14,000 fine and up to seven years in prison.

BROOKLYN CENTER, MN — How important is your wood furniture to you? For one grandmother, it was enough to shoot a relative over, police say.

The 75-year-old woman is accused of shooting her grandson over a cup of tea and where it was placed. Helen Lenoir Washington, of Brooklyn Center, now faces a second-degree assault charge, according to KSTP.

On Oct. 12, police responded to the 5800 block of Camden Avenue North in Brooklyn Center on a report of a shooting. Officers found a man in a front yard with a gunshot wound in his thigh, KMSP reported.

The man told police his grandmother shot him after a dispute about where he put a cup of tea, according to the criminal complaint.

A witness said the argument began after the man placed a cup of tea on a piece of furniture, investigators said. When the grandson refused to move it, Washington dumped it out, the witness stated.

After the grandson put another cup of tea on the furniture, his grandmother shot him, police said. Washington admitted she was angry her grandson put a cup of tea on a wood table, according to the complaint.

The 75-year-old woman faces up to seven years in prison and a $14,000 fine.
