Now Hear This: Liriodendron Mansion Wedding Gets National Nod

The wedding in Bel Air was especially memorable for the groom, who only recently became able to hear.

BEL AIR, MD — People magazine covered a recent weekend wedding at the Liriodendron mansion in Bel Air. The groom, who was born with hearing loss, reportedly got a cochlear implant the week before at the University of Maryland Medical Center, so he could hear sounds for the first time.

"When my father-in-law gave a toast, everybody cheered and I could actually hear the clinking," David Alianiello told People.

Cochlear implants are installed inside the ear and also have an external piece behind the ear. They amplify sound, stimulate the auditory nerve and send signals to the brain, according to the National Institutes of Health.

More than 320,000 people have had cochlear implants installed since the mid-1980s, when they were approved by the Food and Drug Administration, federal health officials report.

Until he received the cochlear implant, Alianiello was reading lips to understand what people were saying, according to WBAL, which said he teaches students who are deaf and hard of hearing.

Alianiello reportedly works at Villa Cresta Elementary School in Parkville.

In addition to being able to hear the music at his February wedding at the Liriodendron in Bel Air, he and wife, Cortney, have a second child on the way.

David Alianiello told People he was "looking forward to the first words my new baby speaks."

When Alianiello tied the knot this February, he and his bride did so at a location with a rich history connected to medical progress.

The Liriodendron mansion was built in 1898 as a summer home for Dr. Howard A Kelly, one of four founders of Johns Hopkins Hospital and a celebrated surgeon.
