Politicians, Public Pay Respects To Rep. Elijah Cummings: Photos
U.S. Rep. Elijah Cummings is lying in state in Washington, D.C., as the public pays respects to the late Baltimore congressman. See photos.

WASHINGTON, DC — Political leaders from both major parties were joined by members of the public in paying their respects Thursday to U.S. Rep. Elijah Cummings. The Baltimore native is the first African American lawmaker to lie in state in the U.S. Capitol.
Cummings, who was chairman of the House Committee on Oversight and Reform at the time of his death, lay in state in the National Statuary Hall at the Capitol. A formal ceremony was held Thursday morning for members of Congress, family of Cummings and invited guests, followed by a public viewing.

Cummings, who died Thursday at age 68, was born the son of former sharecroppers and rose to become a key figure in the impeachment inquiry into President Donald Trump.

The funeral service for Cummings will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at New Psalmist Baptist Church, 6020 Marian Drive, Baltimore. There will be a viewing at 8 a.m.

Former presidents Barack Obama and Bill Clinton are both scheduled to speak at Friday's funeral.
On Wednesday, Cummings lay in state at Morgan State University in Baltimore. The Maryland congressman and civil rights champion died Oct. 17 at age 68 of complications from long-standing health problems.
