Top Halloween Candy Ranked By State: A Trick Or Treat?

ACROSS AMERICA — Since August, stores have been seen lining their shelves with Halloween candy, sending everyone's sweet tooth into overdrive. By now, the jumbo variety packs of some of the most recognizable candy brands are most likely being tossed in the bargain bin. However, consumers are still coming out in droves to purchase their favorites.

Every year, the bulk candy retailer and distributor Candystore.com pools data on candy sales from across the country. The findings are always interesting, even if they do raise a few eyebrows. Compared to last year, when trick-or-treating was upended by COVID-19, candy spending is predicted to be $10.14 billion this year, a more than 25 percent increase over 2020 and more than 15 above 2019 sales.

With more than 172 million Americans celebrating Halloween, 96 percent will purchase candy. Using data from the National Retail Federation, Candystore.com reveals what sweets are the top sellers in America, shown below, as well as in each state.

Reese's Cups takes the crown as most popular across the country, with the highly marketed candy corn coming in last. Perhaps more surprising is that Hot Tamales beats the likes of Sour Patch Kids, Hershey Kisses and even Snickers.
