Americans headed into Tuesday facing another grim milestone in the age of the new coronavirus, with deaths topping the 3,000 mark as the virus continued a lethal assault on people across the country, including on doctors and nurses who had been treating the ill.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo of New York, which has recorded more confirmed cases and deaths than anywhere in the country, pleaded with other states to send spare health workers to New York as the state braces for the looming peak of the new coronavirus spread.

And in New York City, the epicenter of the epicenter, a 1,000-bed Navy ship was prepared to take on patients, and a makeshift hospital was erected in Central Park as the number of confirmed cases continued to grow.

Dr. Anthony Fauci, the nation's top infectious disease official and a member of the federal coronavirus task force, said Sunday during a news briefing that between 100,000 and 200,000 people in the United States could die from the pandemic in his estimate, which he emphasized is subject to change.

As of Monday evening, there were more than 163,000 confirmed cases of coronavirus in the United States, with 3,008 deaths and almost 5,800 recovered, according to Johns Hopkins University.
