Aya Eeweemilaani (what to hear and translate https://mc.miamioh.edu/ilda-myaamia/dictionary/entries/6898)
I am a member of the Miami Tribe of Oklahoma, or "niila myaamia". My family also traces back to the Wea Tribe (related to the Miami, Kaskaskia, and Piankashaw).
I studied creative writing, traditional pottery, and sculpture at the Institute of American Indian Arts in Santa Fe, New Mexico. I went on to Elizabeth City State University and received both a Bachelor of Art in Mass Communication and Bachelor of Art in Fine/Studio Art.
In 2018, I returned to the Outer Banks to work for the Frisco Native American Museum & Natural History Center.
I have been involved with the museum since 1997, working to help create a pow wow, special exhibits and expand understanding of native history to locals and visitors.
I choose to honor my ancestors through all my arts. Photography, printmaking, pottery, jewelry and a writer, a teller of stories.
