Hometown: Avon, Conn.
Birthday: March 3
Bio:
I joined Patch during the summer of 2011, just one month after graduating from the University of Richmond in Richmond, Va. At Richmond, I worked for the school newspaper, The Collegian, for four years, working my way up from a copy editor to become the sports editor and eventually the editor-in-chief. As editor, I led a staff of 40 outstanding people and despite the often high stress levels, I enjoyed it more than anything I've done before. That experience, along with my journalism and leadership studies coursework, should translate well into a role as Local Editor in Spring Valley.
Though I'm originally from Avon, Conn., I've been living in Richmond for the past four years and enjoyed the weather, the people and the lifestyle that the south (if you consider Richmond the south) has to offer. My parents moved to Charleston in 2009, and ever since I've wanted to make South Carolina my home, so I'm excited for the opportunity to get to know Spring Valley. While I'll be doing my best to become a "local," I am new to the Columbia area, so if you see me with a lost look or you just want to chat about the area, please come up and chat or get in touch.
In my spare time, I like to do anything sports-related. I'm a big baseball, football and hockey fan and also an avid golfer. When I'm not feeding my sports addiction, I love heading to the beach or the movies for some old-fashioned relaxation.
My family includes my dad, a sports radio personality, my mom, an employment lawyer, and my two younger brothers, who are both on the way to being better baseball players than I ever was. And of course, while I'm excited to start my professional journey on my own, my two dogs, Jeter and Robbie (yes, that's the New York Yankees' middle infield), might be what I miss the most.
My Beliefs
At Patch, we promise always to report the facts as objectively as possible and otherwise adhere to the principles of good journalism. However, we also acknowledge that true impartiality is impossible and human beings have beliefs. So in the spirit of simple honesty, our policy is to encourage our editors to reveal certain key beliefs to the extent they feel comfortable.
This disclosure is not a license for our editors to inject these beliefs into stories or to dictate coverage according to them. In fact, the intent is the opposite: we hope that the knowledge that our beliefs are on the record will force us to be ever mindful to write, report, and edit in a fair, balanced way. And if you, the user, ever think you see evidence that we failed in this mission, we wholeheartedly invite you to let us know.
Politics
* How would you describe your political beliefs?
I'm not registered as a republican or a democrat, but I would say I'm liberal-leaning. I've become more interested in politics during the past few years, and while there are a lot of difficult issues without simple answers, I think there are inherent inequalities that make life in America more difficult for certain people, and I believe the government should take that into account when deciding on policy.
Religion
* How religious would you say you are? Casual, observant, devout, non-religious?
Short answer: casual. Long answer: I was raised Catholic and still go to church when I'm home. I believe in and try to follow basic Catholic ideals, but I'm more skeptical of some of the specifics.
