After Multiple Suicides, 200 Sailors Move Off USS George Washington: Report

In the last 12 months, seven crew members have died on the ship docked at a shipyard in Newport News, according to a report.

NEWPORT NEWS, VA — The suicide deaths of multiple crew members aboard the USS George Washington have prompted hundreds of sailors to move off the Virginia-docked Navy aircraft carrier, according to a report.

The sailors will move to a Navy installation as the aircraft carrier continues to undergo refueling and repair at a shipyard in Newport News, according to a CNN report.

Over the last year, seven crew members on the USS George Washington have died, including four by suicide, CNN reported. In April, three crew members died within a week of each other.

The deaths prompted the Navy to open an investigation into the command climate and culture onboard the Nimitz-class carrier, according to CNN.

Between 2,000 and 3,000 sailors are still living aboard the aircraft carrier.
