NoVA, DC Heat To Feel Like 100 Degrees This Week: Forecast

The summer heat returns to Northern VA, DC this week, with "feels-like" temperatures likely to reach the 100-degree mark, forecasts predict.

WASHINGTON, DC — Summer heat returns to Northern Virginia and The District later this week, with "feels-like" temperatures likely to reach the 100-degree mark before the weekend, weather forecasters predict.

The heat wave that has been responsible for the record-breaking scorching temperatures in the Northwest will shift eastward during the first week of August, according to AccuWeather, bringing temperatures from near-average levels to 5-15 degrees above normal.

"The first week of August is expected to feature an expansive swath of well-above-average temperatures spanning from the Dakotas to the East Coast. High temperatures well into the 90s with AccuWeather RealFeel Temperatures soaring into the triple digits will require air conditioning units to constantly run," AccuWeather long-range meteorologist Brandon Buckingham said.

The hottest day of the week appears to be Thursday, according to the National Weather Service, where temperatures in the mid-90s could feel as hot as near or above 100 degrees, possibly warranting a heat advisory.

Temperatures will head into the 90s starting Tuesday and Wednesday with a high near 90 degrees in the Northern Virginia-DC region, the Weather Service said.

Thursday will likely be a hot and humid 95 degrees for a high, and Friday will see a high around 92 degrees before falling back into the upper 80s on Saturday. But that's without taking humidity into account, which could make days feel much hotter.

On Friday clouds will increase and showers and storms should become likely in the afternoon and evening, according to the Washington Post's Capital Weather Gang. "Some of these storms could be heavy. After evening storms, rain decreases Friday night with lows near 70."

The Weather Gang says to expect a steamy weekend, with cloud cover and the chance for rain and storms both days, especially in the afternoon and evening. But it shouldn’t be a washout.

"Heat of this magnitude can be dangerous if an extended amount of time is spent outside. Frequent breaks, plenty of hydrating fluids and wearing light-colored and loose-fitting clothing can help to minimize the effects," Buckingham said.

For those who are averse to the heat, Monday may be the coolest day this week, the National Weather Service said. Temperatures will again top 90 on Sunday, and humidity will increase, forecasters added.

"A fairly seasonable week ahead for the first week of August. Thursday looks to be the hottest day, while Friday features the highest chance of thunderstorms," the National Weather Service Baltimore-DC station tweeted Monday.
