Swimmer Disappears In Potomac River Near Great Falls, Search Enters Second Day
Virginia and Maryland rescue personnel are still looking for a young man who went missing while swimming in the Potomac River on Sunday.
FAIRFAX COUNTY, VA – Virginia and Maryland rescue services are still searching for a swimmer who went missing in the Potomac River near Great Falls on Sunday evening.
According to Montgomery County, MD, fire and rescue officials, a young man became separated from a group of swimmers and disappeared around 6:15 p.m. His last known location was near the Sandy Landing river access point on the Maryland side of the Potomac.
The Potomac River separates Maryland and Virginia in that area, with Montgomery County on the Maryland side and Fairfax County, VA, on the other. According to WTOP, the man was attempting to swim from the Maryland side of the river to the Virginia shore on the other side.

Fairfax County fire and rescue personnel were also part of the rescue and recovery efforts. Dozens of emergency responders and 8 boats were deployed to look for the man, who is presumed drowned.
According to the Montgomery County Fire & Rescue Service spokesperson, the search resumed Monday morning with more swift water boats and a US Park Service helicopter.
