VA, DC Weather: Freeze Watch Overnight In Areas

A freeze watch has been issued for some parts of Virginia. Temperatures will drop to near- and below freezing north and west of DC.

WASHINGTON, DC — Low temperatures Thursday morning in parts of Virginia will make you shiver, with a freeze watch issued for some cities and counties. The weather advisory runs from 1 a.m. to 8 a.m. Thursday, the National Weather Service said.

Temps in the freeze watch are could also dip to 31 degrees. That area includes Augusta, Rockingham, Shenandoah, Frederick, Page, Warren, Clarke, Madison, Rappahannock, Orange, Culpeper, Fauquier, Loudoun, Warrenton, Turnbull, Purcellville, Martinsburg, Charles Town, and Shepherdstown.

"Tonight will be legitimately cold, as temperatures fall to near- and below freezing well north and west of the D.C.," the Washington Post's Capital Weather Gang said. "Even in places above freezing, it’s generally not far, and it will certainly feel like it. Is it really late April?"

Baltimore's record low is 33, and the forecast is 35, the Post said. At Dulles Airport, the record is 32, and the forecast is 33. D.C.'s record of 33 will likely stand, the newspaper said.

"Take steps now to protect tender plants from the cold. To prevent freezing and possible bursting of outdoor water pipes they should be wrapped, drained, or allowed to drip slowly," the National Weather Service said. "Those that have in-ground sprinkler systems should drain them and cover above-ground pipes to protect them from freezing."

Another round of frost or freeze conditions are possible during the overnight and early morning hours Friday night through early Saturday, the forecast said.

Wednesday Night: Mostly clear, with a low around 36. Northwest wind 8 to 14 mph, with gusts as high as 25 mph.

Thursday: Sunny, with a high near 61. Northwest wind 10 to 13 mph, with gusts as high as 21 mph.

Thursday Night: Mostly clear, with a low around 41. Northwest wind 3 to 7 mph.

Friday: Sunny, with a high near 66. Northwest wind 6 to 9 mph.

Friday Night: Mostly clear, with a low around 43. North wind 3 to 5 mph.

Saturday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 68.

Saturday Night: Mostly cloudy, with a low around 47.

Sunday: A chance of showers after 2pm. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 68. Chance of precipitation is 40%.

Sunday Night: Showers likely, mainly between 8pm and 2am. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 57. Chance of precipitation is 60%.
