VA, DC Weather: Labor Day Weekend Forecast Includes Rain, Storms

If you have outdoor Labor Day weekend plans in Northern VA and DC, here's what you need to know about the forecast and when to expect rain.

VIRGINIA — It looks like if you have outdoor weekend plans in the DC region, Saturday is the best of the three days. Sunshine and temperatures around 88 degrees are forecast, with a calm night before rain chances start to loom.

On Sunday, it will be a mix of sun and clouds, with rain showers and possibly thunderstorms developing in the afternoon and evening, the National Weather Service said.

Showers and storms are forecast late Sunday and off-and-on on Labor Day. It doesn't appear to be a washout, but rain is expected to fall during the day on Labor Day and Monday night's rain chances reach 60 percent.

AccuWeather forecasters say Saturday will be the best day of the holiday weekend across much of the mid-Atlantic before a slow-moving area of low pressure approaches the region. This area of low pressure will be the main weather-driver through the early week as it slowly progresses eastward and brings increased opportunities for hot, humid and stormy weather to the region.

"The slow movement of the area of low pressure will allow the system to efficiently pull moisture from the Gulf of Mexico northward into the Northeast by the end of the holiday weekend," AccuWeather Meteorologist Joe Bauer said.

Starting Sunday, this influx of moisture will bring a return of humid, sticky air to much of the mid-Atlantic and Northeast, according to AccuWeather. Along with hotter and more humid conditions, this abundance of moisture will fuel showers and thunderstorms.
