VA Pizzeria Lands On Nationwide List Of Best Pizza Shops

ARLINGTON, VA — A Northern Virginia Neapolitan pizza specialist has landed on a nationwide list of the best pizza shops.

A Modo Mio of Arlington was selected to represent the Old Dominion on Food & Wine's list of the best award-winning pizza shops across each state.

In its selection process, the outlet sought pizzerias recognized across a variety of media, including major pizza competitions, reader polls, ranking lists and local news outlets.

A Modo Mio is an AVPN-certified pizzeria, meaning its pies meet the exacting standards of the Associazione Verace Pizza Napoletana, an organization founded in 1984 to protect the name and identity of Naples, Italy's particular dough-sauce-cheese tradition.

The Farruggio family, immigrants who left Sicily for New York in 1970 and later moved to Northern Virginia, opened their first restaurant, Joe's Place, in Bailey's Crossroads in 1978. The family's business expanded across the region, opening a Joe's Place location on Langston Boulevard in Arlington in 2007. The restaurant rebranded and reopened as A Modo Mio in 2020.

Now, Neapolitan master pizza maker Antonio Biglietto oversees the pizza-slinging, according to the restaurant's website.

Food and Wine notes that A Modo Mio's Neapolitan pies have earned recognition from 50 Top Pizza USA for multiple years, currently ranking No. 37. The website calls the Arlington pizzeria's Margherita pizza "near perfection," and also shouts out local variant The Arlington.

A Modo Mio is open for lunch and dinner. In addition to pizza, it also has a selection of appetizers, pastas, entrees and desserts and offers take-out.

Visit A Modo Mio at 5555 Langston Blvd. in Arlington.
