Arlington Coronavirus Update: 2 New COVID-19 Deaths; 5 New Cases

ARLINGTON, VA — Virginia Department of Health reported two new deaths Tuesday due to COVID-19, the illness associated with the new coronavirus, in the Arlington Health District. The total of COVID-19-related deaths in the Arlington Health District now stands at 140.

VDH officials reported 5 new coronavirus cases Tuesday, which is a third less than the 15 new cases reported on Monday. This brings the total to 3,560.

As of Tuesday, there have been 121,615 total cases statewide, according to data reported by the Virginia Department of Health. In Virginia, there have been 2,612 coronavirus-related deaths to date. There have been a total of 9,621 hospitalized COVID-19 patients.

VDH reported Tuesday that 52,380 COVID-19 tests have been taken in Arlington, with a 5.3 percent positivity rate. Statewide there have been 1,718,020 COVID-19 tests taken, with a 7.9 percent positivity rate, according to VDH.

There have been 19 coronavirus outbreaks in the Arlington Health District as of Tuesday, with 565 cases related to an outbreak. There have been 14 outbreaks at long-term care facilities, two outbreaks at a congregate setting and three outbreaks in health care settings in Arlington. There have been 202 reported coronavirus cases in Arlington involving health care workers.

Globally, more than 25.5 million people have been infected by COVID-19, and over 851,000 people have died, Johns Hopkins University reported Tuesday morning. In the United States, more than 6 million people have been infected and over 183,000 people have died from COVID-19.

Arlington residents should take the following actions to help prevent the spread of COVID-19:

• Avoid close contact with people who are sick.
• Wash hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. An alcohol-based hand sanitizer can be used if soap and water are not available.
• Avoid touching eyes, nose and mouth with unwashed hands.
• Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue, then throw the tissue in the trash.
• Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces.
