Alexandria had lots of business news in January, from Wegmans getting closer to construction to a beloved 47-year business closing.

ALEXANDRIA, VA—There's a lot happening in the business world around Alexandria, from progress on the Wegmans development to restaurant and store openings coming up.

1. Alexandria Restaurant Ranked Best Cheap Eat Of The Year

The reviews are in, and Alexandria can claim the best cheap meal of 2017, at least according to The Washington Post. Royal Nepal, offering Indian and Nepalese favorites at 3807 Mt Vernon Avenue, was ranked first among 10 Baltimore-Washington region restaurants by food critic Tim Carman.

2. BGR The Burger Joint Closes In Alexandria

BGR The Burger Joint has suddenly closed at 106 N. Washington Street in Old Town Alexandria. Nearby, the chain has locations in Arlington, Springfield, Fairfax, Tysons and DC.

3. First Stage Of Wegmans Mixed-Use Development Moves Forward

The City Council has unanimously approved a Stage 1 special use permit and amendments for the future mixed-use development at Hoffman Town Center, which will include Wegmans, other retail and three residential buildings. The next step will be approving the final site and building design, which will allow construction to begin.

4. La Cuisine To Shut Doors In Old Town Alexandria

La Cuisine, a kitchen supply store in Old Town Alexandria, will close its doors at the end of January after 47 years in business. The store is located at 323 Cameron Street across from Alexandria City Hall. A member of the Old Town Boutique District, the independent store has become a go-to destination for unique products and a resource for amaeteur and professional cooks alike.

5. A Historic Tall Ship Is Coming To Alexandria

As Alexandria awaits the restoration of its historic 18th century ship, Old Town waterfront visitors will have something else to get excited about. The Alexandria-based Tall Ship Providence Foundation has purchased a replica of America's first warship in the Continental Navy from Rhode Island. It could be open to the public as soon as 2019 for sailing programs and tours with historical reenactors.

6. New French Restaurant Proposed In Alexandria Near The Metro

3. The owner of Grand Cru Wine Bar and Bistro in Ballston is looking to open a restaurant in Alexandria. Owner Troy Thorpe confirmed to Patch he is applying to open a 300-seat restaurant called Sancerre at 1725 Duke Street. The Planning Commission will hold a hearing on the proposed restaurant on Tuesday, Feb. 6.

7. 5 Exciting Business Openings Coming Soon In Alexandria

A number of businesses are planning to open in the coming months, from Mia's Italian Kitchen to a mixed-use co-working space with retail.

8. Couple's Love Story Begins At Del Ray Pizzeria

Sarah Goodman and Umair Khan's wedding is not only the story of love conquering all. It's the story of Alexandria. She was a Jewish special education teacher and he was a Muslim banker when they met working part-time jobs at Del Ray Pizzeria. They recently got married, celebrating with close family and friends at Restaurant Eve.

9. Old Town Eateries Announced For Alexandria Winter Restaurant Week

Alexandria Winter Restaurant Week runs from Jan. 26-Feb. 4, 2018, and many of the participating restaurants are from Old Town. For 10 days, over 60 restaurants across Alexandria will be offering special menus for a $35 three-course dinner or dinner for two, and a number will have $10, $15 or $20 lunch specials as well.

10. Plans Moving Forward To Build New HQ Building At Potomac Yard

The American Physical Therapy Association's proposal to move its headquarters from Old Town Alexandria to a new building in Potomac Yard is making progress. A public meeting on the detailed building plans was held Wednesday, Jan. 24.
