DMV Extends Deadline on Licenses Due To Expire

After computer outage, Virginia drivers have until Saturday to renew credentials.

At the direction of Gov. Terry McAuliffe, the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) has extended to this Saturday, Feb. 7, the validity of driver’s licenses, vehicle registrations and state ID cards that were set to expire on Jan. 31 through this Friday, Feb. 6.

DMV was originally closed on Saturday, Jan. 31, as a result of a service failure of the state’s IT service provider. However, many offices were able to open later in the morning as computer systems were restored. Those offices also extended their hours until 1 p.m. to serve customers in the lobby.

The extensions will give affected customers added time to renew prior to the new expiration date. In addition, DMV has waived the late fee for these renewals until the Feb. 7 deadline. DMV urges customers to renew before the new deadline.
