On Sunday, July 16, four members of the City of Fairfax Fire Department's swift water rescue team joined four members from Arlington County Fire Department for a joint team deployment to Vermont.

The city team has been assigned to Berlin, Vt.

The mission will include swift water rescue of those endangered by the flooding, damage assessment, and possibly recovery of victims.

Vermont requested assistance through the interstate Emergency Management Assistance Compact to the Virginia Department of Emergency Management, and Virginia accepted the mission.

Additionally, the commonwealth also is sending assets from the Virginia Beach Fire Department.

Last week, President Joe Biden declared a federal major disaster emergency for the state of Vermont.

Vermont has experienced ongoing heavy rains and flooding, and the current extended forecast calls for additional rain. Deployment could last up to 11 days.
