Families in need get a little help from AT&T Pioneers

AT&T Pioneers stop by the Katherine K. Hanley Family Shelter with boxes of holiday cheer

In less than a week families around the country will gather at the table for a feast that comes just once a year. Cranberries, corn, stuffing, bread, turkey, pies and cakes, all of it to enjoy while catching up with relatives and friends. However, while most of us will end up stuffed and in front of the TV on Thanksgiving, there are many Americans who will spend the day as they always do, hungry and in need.

According the American Farm Bureau Federation, the average cost to feed 10 people for Thanksgiving this year is estimated to cost a little more than 49 dollars, well out of the reach of the thousands struggling to make ends meet.

That’s why on Friday the AT&T Pioneers dropped off 15 boxes of turkey day goodies to the families staying at the Katherine K. Hanley Family Shelter in Fairfax County.

The containers were loaded with all the holiday favorites and were the first of several drop offs in the region.

The AT&T Pioneers are a volunteer network whose aim is to improve the quality of life for those less fortunate. The organization started in 1911 with just 734 members including Alexander Graham Bell. Today the Pioneers volunteer more than 15 million hours every year responding to the needs of their communities.
