Bottle Cap Magnets

A fun project for kids and adults both is simple magnets made from metal bottle caps. At my house, we seem to collect everything, and bottle caps are no exception. When I was a kid, we used them for pie plates in the dollhouse. The small metal caps make great containers for all the little things kids love to collect.  

For the magnets, begin by assembling a collection of materials. Tiny toys, fabric, photos, patterned paper and drawing materials are just a few ideas. A 1-inch hole circle hole punch is fun but not required, although you will need scissors to cut pieces to fit in the caps.  

Kids can create mini collages and sculptures by adding beads, buttons or pompoms and gluing them inside the caps.  

Alternatively, try cutting 1-inch circles from a photo, patterned paper or a piece of colorful art work. The 1-inch circle seems to be the perfect size to slip into the cap and paste in place. Seal your creation with an extra layer of glue or one of the paper sealing products available at craft stores, such as dimensional modge podge.  

This can also be a great way to give new life to tiny toys or even lost accessories. Barbie's spare shoe can become the centerpiece for a design, or a favorite eraser can be transformed into a new creation.  

Have fun with this small circular format. Glue magnets to the back of the caps with hot glue or super glue and enjoy on the fridge or magnetic board. I noticed many of the metal caps are magnetic and will stick to magnets even without glue. Small circular magnets can be purchased at craft or office supply stores.
